Kim Kern is a passionate learner leader who specializes in creating high quality professional learning communities and developing school structures that encourage equity, systems reform, and innovation. Kim is currently the Director of Innovative Learning for POUSD and Principal of Piner-Olivet Charter School in Santa Rosa, California. Kim is responsible for districtwide capacity-building reform initiatives in Language Arts, Science, Math, STEAM, and Technology-integration. She also designs and implements professional development that connects instruction, technology, and social emotional learning with student-centered classroom, schoolwide, and systems practices.
Twice National Board certified (ELA) with a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, she is an experienced educator with 12 years in the classroom teaching a variety of Language Arts and Fine Arts courses in high-needs secondary schools. As a teacher she served in diverse roles as a Literacy/ELA and ELL coach, Statewide CRLP Teacher Leader, SALT Trainer-of-Trainers, Lead Teacher with America’s Choice Model Classrooms, and with the ELL Institute and the New Teacher Project. As an administrator and instructional leader, she served across the entire range of K-12 education – from High School and Middle School Assistant Principal positions to Elementary and Middle School Principal positions.
